Synopsis
John Cuthbert arrived in Sydney in 1843, set up his first shipyard in 1853, and soon became the port's leading shipbuilding and ship repair enterprise for both commercial and naval vessels, sail and steam, on the frontier of maritime innovation. He also operated as a merchant, shipowner and shipping agent and became recognised as one of Sydney's most generous philanthropists. He died at his Millers Point home in December 1874.
